Your first port of call should be to approach your local Golf Club or check to see if there's a regional driving range with a golf tutorial facility...

Newcomers to the sport can then obtain the necessary info on how to play golf from grass roots level upwards....

Ask trusted friends that play golf what places they would recommend... maybe they can introduce you as a guest if they are members of a Club... word of mouth and being able to ask questions about what's your best fit is sometimes the cheapest route to take rather than join an organisation that is not what is described on their website or reviewed online.... take your time and weigh up all your options.

We hope that people of all ages and abilities can find golfing facilities in their neighbourhood that will enhance their knowledge and enjoyment of the sport.

The Scottish Golf Union  introduced the 'Clubgolf' national programme in 2003 making it possible for primary school youngsters to develop basic golfing skills at their local Golf Clubs. It was hoped that golf's popularity would greatly increase in the years to come with this extra generation of untapped talent flourishing in the sport at such an early age.

The programme was initially successful with many youngsters enjoying free coaching at their local Golf Clubs but many Clubs have been unable to maintain the momentum of recruitment and a lack of participation with many schools dropping out of the scheme.

The SGU have now introduced a comprehensive coaching tool to try and encourage more kids and indeed coaches and volunteers to take up and administer the game under the National Junior Framework title.

We wish them every bit of luck and success in this innovational approach which seems to involve a lot more communication and a greater range of activities at appropriate 'levels' of ability with the hope that more children will have fun being competitive with the choices and challenges that are available to them.

On the positive side, many Clubs have maintained healthy Junior memberships and it's mainly because they're able to recruit enthusiastic Professionals and willing volunteers ready to give up a good part of their own valuable spare time to encourage the youngsters.
